The short answer: open a familiar white page and lower hardware brightness first. Use Displays settings when macOS exposes the control, otherwise use the monitor buttons or working DDC. Night Shift changes color temperature. Software dimming darkens the rendered image and is a fallback, not proof that the backlight moved.

01Prove that brightness is the problem
Use the same two surfaces before and after each change. A mostly white page reveals excessive light output. A familiar dark interface reveals lost shadows, borders, or low-contrast text. Keep the room lighting and app windows unchanged during the check.
Night Shift is not this test. Apple's current guide says it shifts supported displays toward warmer colors and that external-display behavior depends on the display. Dark appearance changes compatible interfaces. Neither setting proves that the monitor backlight moved.
Start with brightness, then set Night Shift, then choose appearance. If only one app remains bright, change that app or site instead of driving the whole monitor lower.
02Try the hardware paths in order
Apple's Displays settings show the controls supported by the connected Mac and display. If there is a brightness slider, test it. If there is not, Apple says a third-party display may require its built-in controls and documentation.

TeenyDisplay targets the DDC path with VCP code 0x10. Its source maps the slider percentage to the maximum reported by the monitor. A displayed value of zero does not promise that every monitor becomes physically dark; the monitor decides how it handles its own range.
03Know when TeenyDisplay switches to software
The source has three software cases. A display with no DDC brightness uses software across the slider. A failed DDC write falls back to software for that request. At zero, the controller requests DDC zero and applies full software dimming.
The default software method is a click-through black window over the display. An alternate method scales the gamma table, and the source warns that Night Shift or another app can reset that table. Both methods darken the visible image. Neither changes the monitor's hardware backlight.
That does not make software dimming useless. It makes the tradeoff explicit. Use it when hardware controls are unavailable or have reached their useful minimum. Turn it off before judging color, contrast, shadow detail, or a design export.
04Run a low-end detail check
Lower the screen to the intended night level and reopen the familiar dark interface. Confirm that text, disabled controls, borders, and near-black areas remain distinguishable. If they disappear, back off the software dimming or contrast change.
Do not change the color profile, resolution, refresh rate, or input unless one of those settings is the actual problem. A night-brightness fix should not create a new color or connection problem.

05Save Night and Work as a pair
Record the hardware brightness, any changed contrast, software-dimming state, input, and the normal daytime values. A Night preset without a restore state moves the problem to the next morning.
