Mac external monitor resolution too small? Fix scaling first
A sharp monitor can still be a bad work screen if the text is too small. Pick resolution and scaling for the person reading the screen, then save the monitor state.
The short answer: when external monitor text is too small on a Mac, start in macOS Displays settings and choose a readable scaled mode before saving any preset. Then check refresh rate, HiDPI state, brightness, and viewing distance. More pixels are not useful if the actual job becomes harder to read.

01Check the base display connection
Do not start with a utility if the Mac has not detected the display cleanly. Open System Settings, Displays. Confirm the monitor appears, choose mirror or extend deliberately, and check whether macOS exposes the resolution and refresh choices you expect.
If the monitor is missing, flickering, or locked to a weak mode, the likely problem is cable, dock, adapter, input, or monitor support. A menu bar control cannot repair a bad physical path.
When the external display is detected and stable, move on to readability.
02Pick readability before workspace
The easiest mistake is choosing the mode that shows the most room. That can be right for spreadsheets or timelines. It can be awful for writing, reviews, code, support tickets, and demo tables.
Use the real content as the test. Open the app, document, browser, or signup page you will actually use. Read body text, button labels, table values, and the smallest status text. If your eyes tighten up after one minute, the setting is wrong.
For standing demo stations, test from the visitor side of the table. A resolution that feels good from a chair can be unreadable from three feet away.
03Compare resolution, refresh rate, and HiDPI together
Resolution is not the only number. Refresh rate affects how movement feels. HiDPI state affects how text is rendered. The best choice is the mode that gives readable text, acceptable motion, and stable output with your actual cable and dock.
TeenyDisplay's ResolutionManager models each display mode with width, height, refresh rate, and HiDPI state. It lists available modes with CGDisplayCopyAllDisplayModes, sorts higher-resolution and higher-refresh options first, and can optionally include modes not normally shown by macOS.
The app then switches modes through Core Graphics display configuration. That is useful for repeated setups, but the choice still needs human judgment. Do not save a mode until the screen is comfortable.
04Use the display info before blaming the monitor
Before deciding a monitor is bad, check what the Mac currently sees. TeenyDisplay's display info panel shows connection type, vendor ID, product ID, serial when available, native resolution, current resolution, refresh rate, DDC controls, last DDC read, and current color profile.
That information helps separate problems. A wrong input is different from a wrong resolution. A low refresh rate is different from tiny text. A color-profile issue is different from scaling. Treat each one separately.
If the monitor does not expose DDC controls, resolution may still be available through macOS while brightness or input control may not be. Keep the monitor buttons as the fallback.
05Save presets after the mode is tested
TeenyDisplay presets can save brightness, contrast, volume, input source, resolution width and height, refresh rate, and HiDPI state. That is useful for repeatable states such as Work, Review, Demo Table, Night, or Presentation.
Save the preset after the real test, not before. Walk to the viewing distance. Read the smallest text. Scan the QR code if the screen includes one. Move the mouse. Open a new window. Then save the state.
If a preset restores tiny text later, overwrite it. A preset is not a trophy. It is a shortcut to a known-good state.
