01Choose the job before the screen
A monitor layout is not good or bad in isolation. It is good for a job. Writing, code review, spreadsheet work, support triage, research notes, and live demos all pull attention differently.
For deep work, make the large external monitor the main display and put the app that needs the most attention there. Use the MacBook screen for notes, chat, preview, or source material. For calls, you may want the MacBook to stay central because the camera, keyboard, and trackpad are there.

02Set arrangement in macOS first
Apple's Displays settings are the right place to decide how screens relate to each other. Connect the external display, open Displays settings, and place each display in the same left, right, above, or below relationship as the physical desk.
That placement matters more than it sounds. A pointer that exits the wrong edge slows every drag, split view, screenshot crop, and window move. Fix that before touching brightness.
Mirror only when both screens need to show the same thing. For normal desk work, extend the desktop so each screen has a real job. 03Pick the main display deliberately
The main display is the screen that should receive the menu bar, new windows, and the center of attention. On a docked desk, that is usually the external monitor. On a laptop-first desk, it may be the MacBook screen.
Use a simple test: open a new browser window, a new note, and a new document. If they appear where you expect to work, the main display is probably right. If they keep landing on the screen you use as a side panel, change the main display before adjusting anything else.
For research work, I usually prefer the article draft or source document on the main display and the MacBook screen for notes, chat, or copied snippets. That keeps the primary judgment on the largest readable surface.
04Choose readable resolution before saving state
Resolution is a comfort decision first. More workspace is not useful if text becomes too small to review accurately. Apple's Displays settings expose resolution choices and, on supported displays, refresh-rate choices. Start there.

Do not save a resolution just because it looks impressive. Save it because the text, source, spreadsheet, or screen share is readable for the work you actually do.
05Normalize monitor controls after the layout works
Once the display is in the right place and the text is readable, tune the monitor state. This is where external displays often feel worse than a MacBook screen: brightness keys may not affect the monitor, the input may be buried in buttons, and volume may depend on the display.

06Save two states, not a pile of guesses
A useful monitor workspace usually needs two states: the normal work state and one alternate state. That alternate might be Presentation, Night, Review, or Focus. More presets are only useful if you can name when you will use them.
Test the state twice before saving it. Confirm the main display, arrangement, readable resolution, brightness, input source, and volume. Then save the preset. If the monitor supports input switching, test that by itself before relying on it in a meeting or review session.
