Mac external monitor setup for online classes

An online class monitor should make the lesson easier to watch, not turn every pause into window cleanup. Set layout, scaling, brightness, and the fallback path before the course starts.

01Choose the class job before the monitor

Online classes are not one workflow. A lecture, code-along, design critique, language lesson, certification video, and live webinar need different screen priorities.

If the course is video-first, give the lesson the display you can watch without leaning forward. If it is exercise-first, give the workbook, code editor, or note app the primary display. If it is live and includes chat, Q&A, captions, or handouts, leave those surfaces visible before the class starts.

Do not choose a monitor state by looking at the desktop. Open a real lesson. The slide, caption text, playback timeline, and smallest code sample are the test.

02Set mirror or extend in macOS first

Use macOS Displays settings for the base layout. Apple separates display arrangement, mirror or extend, main display, resolution, brightness where available, and color profile into that layer. TeenyDisplay should come after the Mac understands the screens.

Extend is right for most solo course work because the lesson and notes can stay separate. Mirror is right when another person needs to see the same screen, when a classroom monitor faces away from you, or when the course app behaves better on one display.

After choosing mirror or extend, move the pointer between screens. If the pointer crosses the wrong edge, fix arrangement now. That one mismatch will slow every pause, note, screenshot, and transcript lookup.

03Pick scaling for slides, captions, and code

Readable scaling is more important than maximum workspace. A course screen has small things you need to trust: caption text, timestamps, playback speed, slide footnotes, code samples, terminal prompts, quiz choices, and links.

Use the real lesson as the test. If captions are crisp but the code sample is too small, change the mode. If the slide is readable but the note app becomes cramped, move notes or use a different display. Do not solve readability with browser zoom alone until the display mode itself makes sense.

04Set brightness for a long lesson, not a quick glance

Course brightness should feel boring after thirty minutes. Too bright at night makes captions and white slide decks tiring. Too dim during the day makes code and diagrams harder to scan.

TeenyDisplay controls hardware DDC brightness when the monitor exposes it, and uses software dimming as a fallback when DDC brightness is unavailable. If your monitor does not expose a setting, keep the monitor buttons as the fallback. A Course preset should not pretend unsupported hardware can be controlled reliably.

05Save a Course preset after one real pass

Save the preset after a real lesson opens cleanly. The test is simple: lesson visible, notes reachable, captions readable, input correct, brightness comfortable, and no surprise window hiding the controls.

Name the preset after the job, not the monitor. "Course" is better than "LG 4K" because it tells you when to use it. If the same display also has Work, Night, or Presentation states, keep the names practical.

If you use Shortcuts, TeenyDisplay's teenydisplay:// URL commands can apply a preset, set brightness, switch inputs, or query display info. Keep that automation optional. It should save clicks, not hide a setup you no longer understand.
