Mac external monitor setup for spreadsheet review
A spreadsheet review is not just a bigger-screen problem. The display has to keep headers, rows, notes, source data, and output readable at the same time.
The short answer: use extended desktop, put the main grid on the largest readable display, keep source and output visible nearby, choose readable scaling before extra columns, normalize brightness and contrast, then save a Review preset only after the setup catches real mistakes.
This guide is for CSV checks, spreadsheet handoffs, converted JSON review, QA fixture review, export comparison, and support tables. It is narrower than a general external monitor workspace setup. The goal here is accurate data review, not the maximum number of windows.

01Use extended desktop for source and output
Mirroring is useful for teaching, demos, and shared displays. It is usually wrong for data review because it wastes one screen. Use extended desktop when you need the source CSV, spreadsheet grid, converted JSON, notes, and browser documentation visible at once.
Apple's Mac display settings are the right place to choose whether a display mirrors or extends the desktop, arrange displays, choose a main display, and adjust resolution. Set that first. A monitor utility should not be the first place you fix display arrangement.
For data review, put the highest-risk view on the main display. That is often the spreadsheet or CSV grid. Use the secondary screen for the raw source, converted output, ticket, or handoff note.
02Choose readable scaling before extra columns
Spreadsheets tempt you to maximize visible columns. That is useful only until headers, notes, long IDs, dates, currency, or warning values become hard to read. Review work needs accuracy first.
Start with a resolution that lets you read a full header row and at least a few representative rows without leaning in. Then test rows with long values, empty values, and copied identifiers. If the text is too small, use a more readable scaling choice even if fewer columns fit.

03Set brightness and contrast for grid work
Brightness that feels fine for video can be tiring for spreadsheet review. Brightness that feels calm at night can make grid lines, row highlights, and muted text too faint. Set brightness and contrast after the window layout and scaling are in place.

04Save a Review preset after checking real data
Do not save a Review preset from an empty spreadsheet. Open the kind of file you actually review: a CSV export, a wide support table, a product list, a QA fixture, or converted JSON next to the source. Then tune the setup.
A useful Review preset usually includes readable resolution, refresh rate when relevant, brightness, contrast, input, and volume state. It does not include macOS display arrangement, because macOS owns arrangement and main-display setup. Treat those as prerequisites.
Test the preset twice. Switch away, apply the Review preset, and confirm that the grid, source, and note are still readable. If the preset saves too much noise, simplify it. A preset should reduce setup time, not create another thing to debug.
05Pair the display setup with a data check
