Mac external monitor setup for document review

Document review fails quietly when text is too small, brightness is wrong, tables wrap badly, or the source window keeps moving. Set the monitor for reading before judging the draft.

The short answer: use the external monitor as the main reading surface, keep the source and notes on predictable screens, choose readable scaling before extra space, and set brightness and contrast for long text review. 01Put the draft where your attention belongs

Document review needs a stable attention path. The draft should land on the screen where you can read the longest lines and compare the most details. For most desks, that is the external monitor. The MacBook display can hold notes, source links, chat, or the issue that requested the edit.

Use macOS Displays settings first. Choose whether to extend or mirror, place displays in the same left-right relationship as the physical desk, and choose the main display before saving anything in a utility. TeenyDisplay does not arrange screens. It is useful after the layout is already right.

02Choose readable scaling before extra columns

Document review rewards accuracy, not pixel density. A very dense resolution can make a page look efficient while hiding punctuation mistakes, awkward line breaks, table overflow, and copied characters inside code blocks.

Start in macOS Displays settings. Pick a resolution or scaling option that lets you read the draft at normal posture. 03Set brightness and contrast for reading

Brightness that looks fine for a short glance can become harsh during a long review. Too bright, and body text feels noisy. Too dim, and small punctuation and low-contrast comments disappear.

TeenyDisplay can control brightness through DDC when the monitor supports it, and it falls back to software dimming when hardware control is unavailable or insufficient. Its contrast control also depends on what the display exposes. That limitation matters: if the monitor blocks a hardware control, use the monitor menu or pick a simpler fallback.

04Check color profile only when it affects the review

Most document edits are about structure and words. Color profile checks matter when the review includes screenshots, UI states, contrast examples, diagrams, brand colors, or PDF exports where color can change the decision.

TeenyDisplay's current source treats color profile access as read-only and reports the active display color space name. That is useful for noticing that the monitor state changed. macOS and ColorSync still own real profile selection.

05Review Markdown and source notes side by side

A document-review desk should make comparison easy. Put the rendered draft on the large external monitor. Put source notes, issue context, or the raw Markdown where you can glance without losing your place. If you keep moving windows to understand the document, the layout is still wrong.

06Save a Review preset after one real pass

A preset should capture a proven state, not a guess. Open a real document first. Check body text, headings, links, tables, code blocks, screenshots, and notes. Adjust brightness, contrast, input, and resolution only after the content is on screen.

Keep a fallback beside it: the original input source, normal resolution, and the monitor's hardware buttons. A saved state is useful only if you can recover when the dock, cable, or monitor changes.
